5 Steps to Increasing Your Emotional Intelligence at Work

5 Steps to Increasing Your Emotional Intelligence at WorkEmotional intelligence at work wont just help you be a better coworker and employee. It is instrumental if you want to become a leader, or a mover and shaker within your field. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) Figuring out what other people may be thinking, wanting, feeling, and needing, and being sensitive and adaptable to those things will also, of course, make you a better person. Developing these skills would be a win-win personally and professionally, and may just be the secret weapon you need to distinguish yourself and achieve that extra level of success. Here are 5strategies that you can use to start honing (and eventually mastering) your emotional intelligence at work. Start early and see how your career can change.1. Self-AssessIts not just about knowing who you are, or what you like, or even what your wants and needs are. Its not even merely being honest with yourself abou t your strengths and weaknesses. Its about understanding these things and having the confidence to work from within them, with an aim of accepting your current state, but constantly striving to improve. If you master this, and know exactly where and who you arein work and in lifeyoull be much better equipped to get where you need to go.2. Self-regulateDevelop your inner Zen master. Keeping your cool in a crisis will help distinguish you for leadership. And being disciplined enough to control your emotions and disruptive or destructive tendencies might eventually reroute them entirely. Cultivate calm and positivity. Worst case scenario, youll stress much less. Best case, youll become the amtsstube guru, then Queen of the Universe.3. Practice empathyYou may think your manager or your co-worker is a total jerk, maybe even an incompetent one. But before you write them off, try to imagine being in their shoes. Are there complicating factors in their lives that you may or may not know abo ut that might be affecting their work or behavior? If you can try and imagine how others might be feeling, youll be better able to feel for themand able to exercise compassion. The selfish upside here is that youll get much better at understanding what motivates people, and able to maneuver yourself and your gruppe accordingly.4. Relate to peopleReal connections are hard to come by. Cultivate them. Dont just treat people like stepping stones and distractedly try to maintain your relationships. Work at it. Its much easier to do if you work on 3 and actually listen to and care about people. And its crucial for developing 5.5. CommunicateYouve heard a million times that effective communication is the biggest key to leadership and real success. Thats probably because its true. Cultivating all of the above skills will help you to avoid misunderstandings, miscommunications, bruised feelings, and mixed signals. It will make your team stronger, and it will make you betterat your job and at your life. Youll have a much easier time developing your sense of purpose and working on your own and with your team to achieve that purpose.

Temp Employees Are The Unsung Heroes Of The Working World

Temp Employees Are The Unsung Heroes Of The Working World While theres no shortage of advice on how women can advance in their careers, fromnegotiating a raise to taking enough vacation time, much of this advice is tailored to long-term, permanent employment. In the conversation about career advancement and rights, however, we need to create space to adocate for another grouptemporary employees.According to an NBC News report, the temp worker industry grew to 3 million people as of July 2017, and there is a rise in staffing agenies placing temp workers across all industries. As NBC put it, No longer are (temp workers) merely office workers answering phones theyre packing boxes and operating machinery in warehouses, and employed as security guards, janitors and nursing assistants. And while more and more individuals are turning to alternative forms of work, like freelancing and temping, there are far and few legal or ethical measures in place to ensure that their pay and treatment on the job is equal and equitable. Temp workers are often stuckverzierung with underemployment and underappreciation in the workforce theyre unsung heroes.I recently made the switch to part-time freelance writing after mytemporaryadministrative job abruptly ended. I took a necessary sick day from work and received an email stating that my services were no longer needed and have since received no word on a new assignment from the staffing agency that has employed me since October 2017.My story pales in comparison, though, to the tales of temp workers who are injured while doing dangerous factory work, many of whom are often immigrants. There is subtle and blatant abuse of temp workersacross the board. The abuse comes in the form of unreptuable staffing agencies charging job seekers exorbitant fees and no job placement to show for it, low wages in comparison to permanent employees in the saatkorn positions, and general disregard for the work and needs of temp workers, like medical leav e and sick time. All this while staffing agencies profit from placing workers in sometimes less-than-desirable work environments. The way they do this is by charging businesses more money than the worker is being paid hourly.I once stumbled upon an invoive to a construction firm, where I worked for a week as a receptionist. I realized that while I was being paid $11 an hour, my staffing agency received $20 for every hour of my service. Throughout every temp gig Ive worked, there were microaggressions ranging from the constant forgetting of my name (in favor of simply referring to me as the temp), a questioning of my qualifications, and being overloaded with the work that no one else in the offices wanted to do.The temp industry isnt always awful. There are times when temp positions can turn into permanent job offers and workplaces where a temp worker is regarded no differently than a permanent employee, but sadly this too often isnt the case. While some states are doing more to improv e treatment within the industry like California, which in 2014 enacted a law that makes companies liable if temp employees are underpaid by their staffing agencies it will take more states to step up and advocate for temp workers for change to be made. There are many people who end up temping for years because the job industry can be barren at times, and even if a person has to take on a one-time temp gig, they deserve the saatkorn level of respect and rights as long-term, permanent employees.--Tiffany Curtis is a Philly-based freelance writer, podcaster, and sex positivist whose work focuses on empowerment for women of color, race and culture, and sex positivity.
